Sykes Timber are an indie family are Timber Merchants specialising in quality Hardwood and quality Softwood and have one of the most comprehensive ranges of hardwood and softwood stock in the country, including solid hardwood flooring and hardwood decking, all stored under cover at their 10 acre site in Atherstone, Warwickshire.
“Our hardwood merchants business was established in 1862 and nearly 160 years later the company remains an independent family business committed to supplying quality hardwood and softwood, with a reputation for our high standard of service.” says Joseph Sykes, 6th Generation Sykes to join the family business.
They have a wide variety of people who purchase from them such as a DIY enthusiast mending their gate or fence through to their big boat builders in South Hampton. They also sell to lots of high end joinery shops and even provided timber for Buckingham Palace.
Their story:
Lockdown for Sykes Timber meant that they got to really understand who their customers were as welll as streamlining their teams to make a more efficient workforce.
Like everyone else they struggled with shipping and stock however luckily due to their 10 acre site they managed to really focus on their loyal customers ensuring that they were never without. This sometimes meant they had to make difficult decisions on last minute orders from new companies, they knew they had to look after their own first.
Joseph joined the business only recently and at 22 it made sense for him to look at how he could build up the family business’s social media presence to attract new customers and keep their existing customers informed.
He worked with instagram, something his family had admittedly not taken to before and he has built up a following across the USA, Canada as well as the UK. This means that they sell everything from sustainable off cut wood from their shop in Atherstone to the locals through to bigger orders from across the pond.
